There is more than one definition of frizz, but to put it simply, frizz is hair that does not align with the surrounding hairs but stands up or curls independently, creating a fuzzy or irregular texture.
If you feel that you are constantly trying to find a way to tame your frizzy hair, you are not alone. Many women have to fight the frizz all the time, it seems a never-ending battle and a very tiring one. Before you can win this fight against unwanted frizz you need to determine first what are the factors that trigger your hair to frizz so you can prevent it, and what are the possible remedies for it.

Frizz occurs when there is not enough moisture in the hair. This causes hair to seek moisture from the air around it. As a result, your hair appears dry and frizzy instead of smooth and defined. - Shower Routine – a Hot shower is very relaxing especially if you are feeling tired from days work. Scalding hot water is not doing your hair (and skin) any favors. Hot water can strip your hair’s natural oil that keeps it moisturized and shiny. Since lack of moisture can cause your hair to frizz, it is better to avoid anything that can remove hair’s natural oil and moisture. Keep in mind that lukewarm water and short shower time is your hair’s best friend.
- Daily Use of Hot Styling Tools – Extreme heat exposure is also a frizz maker. Limit the use of these hot styling tools to avoid frizzy hair. If you can’t avoid using a hairdryer, look for a hairdryer with ionic technology and setting should be on low level or low heat. The ions produce a negative charge which flattens and smoothes the hair cuticle.
- Styling Products and Hair Treatments – You might not notice at first but chemical exposure is also one of the major causes why your hair frizzes. Chemical over processing hair through perming, bleaching, and using high volumes of developer will also cause frizz in your hair ends and even the hair shaft. Using styling products can cause build up in the hair, as a result, your hair may appear dry and frizzy.
- Too Much Shampooing – It is advisable to shampoo your hair twice or thrice a week to keep frizz level down. Too much shampooing, especially if it is of high pH level can make your hair dry and dull, leaving it frizzy.
- Damaged Hair Ends – Brittle split ends is a surefire way to experience frizz. The longer those split ends stick around, the higher the chance of hair damage climbing up your hair strands.
How to Prevent Frizzy Hair?
Whether your hair gets frizzy because of the weather or for no reason at all your hair decides to stand up, frizzy hair is something that a lot of women struggle with. Here are some sure-fire tips on how to prevent hair frizz.
- Avoid brushing the hair after it dries. Brushing disrupts hair’s cuticle and stretches hair that leads to breakage. The best way you can is towel dry your hair using a microfiber towel or cotton cloth after you shower and then brush, cp,b, or finger-comb it.
- When humidity leaves your hair in a frizzy mess, the best thing you can do is wet your hands and finger-comb the hair to tame tangles and tackle frizz.
- Use a protein-infused conditioner to prevent hair frizz and for shiny locks.
- Go easy on using relaxers and straighteners because it can make your hair brittle that leads to breakage.
- Put the moisture back in your mane. Use a conditioner, natural oil or frizz cream.
- Hair products with alcohol content can dry your hair out, setting you up for frizz. Switch to alcohol-free hair products or use salon-quality products. Salon-quality hair products don’t contain any harsh ingredients.
- Pick a sulphate-free, glycerine packed shampoo. Glycerin helps combat hair frizz by penetrating the hair and hydrating it from the inside out and creates a protective coating so the hair will less likely to lose its moisture.
- Keep your hair topped up with moisture to prevent the cuticle from opening up and letting moisture in. Use a conditioner with glycerine content and shea butter.
- Use a hydrating hair mask once a week to prevent the hair from opening up and letting in moisture that leads to hair frizz. Doing a mask of natural oil or specialized hair treatments will keep hair moisturized and less prone to damage from styling.
- Let your hair 90% air dry before blow drying to get a much sleeker finish.
Amazing Home Remedies for Frizzy Hair
For most women, frizzy hair problem is a daily battle and for others, it can be an occasional problem. Whatever the case might be, it is important that you know some remedies to treat your hair frizz.
- Sparkling Water – Sparkling water is also known as carbonated water. It is made by using pressure to dissolve carbon dioxide gas in water. This kind of water has low pH level that helps fight frizz caused by humidity.
What to do: Simply rinse your hair with sparkling water after shampooing to soothe and tame the frizz.
- Apple Cider Vinegar – The acid content of ACV will smooth out the frizz and give new life to dull hair.
What to do: Mix equal amount of water and ACV to reduce its acidic property. Use this solution as a final rinse after washing or shampooing your hair. This home treatment will not only tame your hair frizz, it also adds shine to your locks. Use this solution every two weeks.
- Beer – Beer is packed with nutrients, minerals, vitamins, antioxidants, and amino acids that the hair needs. It is one of the best treatments to restore hair’s moisture.
What to do: Coat your hair with beer, allow it sit for a few minutes before rinsing off with cold water or mix equal amount of beer, shampoo, and conditioner and apply the mixture on your hair. Brush your hair to create tension and leave it on for a few minutes before rinsing with cold water.
- Avocado Hair Mask – The high amount of vitamin E content of avocado helps tame hair frizz. Aside from its amazing hydrating benefit, it also has good kind of fatty acids that soothe frizzy and unruly hair.
What to do: Mash one ripe avocado and mix it well with a little amount of olive oil. After shampooing, Coat your entire hair with the mixture and leave it on for 30 minutes before rinsing off with cold water.
- Banana – This fruit is rich in natural oils, potassium, vitamins, and carbohydrates which makes it great for hair conditioning. All the said ingredients from banana help lock in moisture to your locks, soften and add shine to your hair, and helps repair and prevent split ends.
What to do: Make a hair mask by mixing mash ripe banana with a ¼ cup of yogurt and 2 tablespoons each of honey and olive oil. Apply the mixture to your entire hair and cover with a shower cup. Leave it on for 30 minutes to 1 hour. Shampoo, conditioner, and rinse your hair as usual. Do this home treatment once a week.
- Coconut Milk – It works as a natural light protein and moisture treatment for frizzy hair.
What to do: Heat up a 2 tablespoon of coconut milk and apply it to your hair. Cover your head with a towel and leave it overnight. In the morning, wash your hair as usual and let it air dry. Do this treatment twice a week for a healthy, shiny, and bouncy hair.
- Olive Oil – When it comes to hair oil, olive oil is one of the best options. Olive oil can give extra moisture to frizzy hair, it helps seal the moisture on the hair strands, and will condition the hair.
What to do: Heat up a 1 cup of olive oil and distribute the oil evenly on your hair. Cover your hair with a shower cap and wrap a hot towel around your head to increase moisture absorption. Leave it for half an hour before rinsing with cold water. Repeat this step three times a week.
